This gallery features surrealist photography. Even in the age before digital imagery and processing software, photographers used double exposures to create illusions. Collages in their own way are forms of manipulation, with artists taking multiple photographs from different sources and combining them to create a unique image. Surrealist painters in the vein of Magritte, Delvaux and Dali, among others, utilized realistic painting but combined disjunctive elements to create an unsettling world. Magritte in particular often relied on a simple dualism of contradictory images, such as the train emerging from a fireplace or the combined day and night street scene.
